White Water Rafting at Kiulu River

No these are NOT the rafts!

We decided that the Kiulu River rafting was quite fast enough for our family.  It also did not take up so much time compared to the Padas River rafting. We were glad we chose this one as it was perfect for our families.

We had another early start leaving at 8:30am. Make sure you take hats that will fit under the helmets, sunscream, board shorts, swimmers, and shoes that will stay on but can get wet.  You can wear no shoes on the raft if you want.  Again, our lovely hotel organised the day trip.  Our wonderful driver Steven took our family again, but this time we picked up the rafting guide as well.  It cost us 160RM per person for bus transfers, lunch, equipment and guide.  It was about a 1 1/2 hour drive to our first destination where we have a very basic morning tea, picked up our life jackets and headed off again another 1/2 north along winding roads.  It was a lovely drive through lush farmland.

Water buffalo along the way

We then reached a secluded area where the rafts were waiting.  We were the only people on the river.  It is a very small and pretty freshwater river with large rounded pebbles on the base.  The water was crystal clear and flowing slowly.  The 7 of us fitted easily in the inflatable raft with the guide up the back.  He gave us a very quick 10 minute safety drill and how to use the paddles and then we were off.  The whole trip took about 2 hours and at times we got a little bored as the river was hardly moving and neither were we.  The kids even jumped in the water and floated with the raft.  Every now and them we saw local farmers and children.  There were quite a few fast rapids where we had to work hard otherwise the boat would spin around.  The girlies screamed a lot and the boys paddled harder to make for the girls!!  Oh well.  We ended at the large timber shed where we had got our life jackets.

We then enjoyed a lovely hot lunch at the shed.  Again, we were the only people here, so it was lovely and relaxing.  We then headed home arriving at about 2:30pm.  A really lovely, relaxing and safe day had by all.
