Day trip to Mount Kinabalu Park

Our Mount Kinabalu trip started at 7:30am.  We decided to hire a driver with amini van as the cost for 2 cars would have been more.  It cost us 500RM total for the day, so we were thrilled.  We were told that we needed to reach the lookout by 9:30am as cloud would start covering the mountain.  So off we went.  We arrived at the lookout at Naburan by 9:00am and took some beautiful photos.  As you can see the clouds were rolling in.

We then strolled down to the markets for some cute tourist bargains.  I bought a beautiful quality rattan bag and purse for for 40RM down from 55RM, a hippy sling bag for 25RM and touristy pencil cases.

On the road again to the base of Kinabalu.  We drove through some lovely arched gates to the entry.  We paid 10RM per adult and 6RM per child.  By now the mist was rolling in and it was quite chilly.  We were definitely not prepared for the cold.  We decided to wait for the 11:00am rain forest tour.  While we were waiting we had a look through the museum.  It had lots of stuffed native animals, local handicrafts and replica villages etc.  Not the most exciting museum but it passed the time. 3RM entry.

At 10:55am we went back down the driveway in the minibus and around a ring road to the bottom of the national park to begin our rain forest walk.  We had to pay again. 9RM per family.  The tour took 45 minutes.  I am sure for some who have never experienced a rain forest it would have been a wonderful walk.  However, for Australians from the North of Australia, this was a very average rain forest walk and the tour guide's knowledge was quite amateurish. I actually fell asleep leaning on a little bridge while the lady was talking. Oh well!

We then went back outside the park to have lunch at one of the local restaurants.  There are 2 outside the park and so we let Steven, our driver, choose which one to go to.  The restaurant was very basic, but the food was great and so so cheap. We had 2 noodle soup dishes, french fries and two coffees for 18Rm.  The kids then had drumsticks for 3RM each.
