Orangutan Rangas at Shangri-la Rasa Ria
These wonderful creatures were the main reason for us being in Kota Kinabalu. With their human like qualities, they kept us totally enthralled for hours. We decided not to visit them at Sepilok due to time constraints so we decided to go to the orphanage at Rasa Ria Shangri-la Resort at Panti Dalit Beach, Tuaran.
The nature reserve is sponsored by the hotel and helps rehabilitate young orangutans until they are ready to go back into the wild. This was only a 40 minute drive out of Kota Kinabalu. We took our own mini bus with driver for the 10:00am session. Our hotel booked us in the day before with no problems. We decided that they may be hungrier at 10:00am. Adults cost 65RM each ($21) and the children were 20RM each ($7). We thought it was a real bargain considering the location.
It was very, very hot and humid. The platform was excellent and everyone could see the babies come in from the forest. They swung along the ropes and played. I am glad we had sprayed on insect repellent before hand as there were many mosquitoes.
The wildlife rangers were the real deal and although we had paid for the 'entertainment' we could tell that they loved these creatures dearly and this was an opportunity to check them over, give them some love and feed them nutrients.
