Shopping in Kota Kinabalu

by - February 06, 2020

There are huge shopping centres throughout the city, often empty during the day.

Did someone say shoes?

With 14 pairs in Sue's cupboard and 7 in mine we certainly helped the Malaysian shoe industry!  I couldn't believe how cheap and how good the quality was.  It was interesting that all the shopping centres in KK had so many shoe shops!

Suria Sabah

Suria Sabah- (Watch out for the slippery floors!)  A relatively new, big and very grande shopping centre which is often very empty.  Some of the shops we loved here were Voir shoe shop, Metro Jaya (department store), Vunfa fashions (for the teens mainly).  There are also other well known brand here such as Bata, Hush puppy, Converse etc.  We paid no more than 40 RM for shoes at Voir and SOS (Shop of Shoes) and for even better quality shoes we paid about 50RM for amazing shoes that were 50% off.  We also bought beautiful branded underwear from MetroJaya for 15-60RM each.  Vunfa fashion had great, groovy clothes for 20-40RM.  I found some lovely work tops.
Wisma Merdeka
Wisma Merdeka - An older shopping complex in the centre of the city.  Many locals are shopping here.  Also many shoe shops.  Our favourite SOS was here with more bargains and all shoes no more than 49RM.  A huge shoe shop on the ground floor also had many bargains.  My brother also bought his lovely Seiko for at least $100 cheaper than Australia.  Sunglasses are also cheap here.  Camera shops were on the ground floor,, however we did find a Panasonic camera shop on the second floor as well. There is an amazing food court on the top level, but make sure you come for lunch as it is closed at night.

  • KK Plaza - Underneath KK Plaza is a great supermarket called Servay that the locals shop at.  Very cheap for stocking up on groceries for the hotel room.  In the mall itself  are local cheaper type shops
  •  Another supermarket that sells high end imported goods (lots from Australia) is Tong Hing Supermarket across the main road from Suria Sabah, 55 Jalan Gaya Road. it was quite expensive with products selling for the same price and dearer than Australia.  Tiger beer was 7RM ($2.50 each).

1Borneo- A little way out of town heading towards Rasa Ria.  A very empty shopping centre due to its location.  It had some high end shops such as FCUK and Esprit.  A real  hotch potch of shops including card shops, hunting shops??, shoe shops (of course!), clothing shops, souvenier shops. A great food court is at the basement.  We went to Apple and paid 18.50RM for some great food for a family of 4.  Starbuck is also here and quite dear.

Komplex Karamunsing- This is the IT shopping centre.  The boys shops!  We even found a tackle shop here!  The second and third floors had many very large IT stores with all sorts of gadgets.  Some prices were great and some were more expensive than Australia, so be careful. We bought Ipad cases, mouse pads, toys that wobbled, USB sticks and headphone etc.  A fun day out where we were definitely the only tourist.  Take a taxi there.
