Kundasang War Memorial
We left at 1 pm from Mount Kinabalu Park for Kundasang War Memorial. It was a lovely 45 minute drive. We then arrived at a small town called Kundasang renowned for their wonderful fruit and vegetable markets and surrounded by a massive construction of a shopping centre. We drove through the construction area and turned left down a dirt hill. Yes, they are the instructions and I am glad we didn't drive on our own!!! The tiny little memorial is dedicated to Australians, New Zealanders, British and Borneo people killed in the death march of World War 2. The cost was 10 rm adult and 5 rm child. We walked up a beautiful landscaped pathway to the entrance.
The first garden is dedicated to Aussies. The second garden is for the English and third for Borneo people. The Borneo garden was the best. It had Pitcher plants, lilies and a huge memorial structure with all the names of the deceased. While it wasn't the most moving memorial, it was so interesting for us as it is a little known part of our history. We then went back to entrance where we watched a recording of Sunday Morning with Jana Wendt!! It was great, and the kids even enjoyed it. We were only there about 40 minutes and that was more than enough without rushing.
