Shopping on Tegallalang Road - All you need to know

Lets's get the pronounciaton right first!  Tegal - la - lang

When we think of Tegallalang we think of the tourist, infested  insta-cringy, women in weird formal dresses, love hearts in the air, birds nest seats, swings, and, oh yes... rice terraces.  I'll let you in on a better rice terrace later. I'm not even going to post ridiculous photos here.  I'm sure you can see them on instagram.  You're welcome!!

Back to shopping!

Tegallalang Road wholesale shopping is a very cheap mecca for all things home decor.  Beautiful white washed timber item from candles to bowls, gorgeous hand made shell, papua collar, macrame everything, baskets, tin work, timber carvings, the list goes on.  This is the place to buy,  unless you're happy to pay three times the price elsewhere.  Another fabulous thing about this shopping is most of it is fixed price and you don't have to buy quantities of anything.  The people are lovely, not pushy and like to chat.

Most people will tell you Tegallalang Road is 10 km of shopping though technically it is two different roads connected to each other all going North to the rice terraces.
Your shopping expedition will start East of Ubud town centre at the, you just can't miss, Arjuna statue located on a main intersection on Jalan Raya Ubud and Jalan Raya Andong to the North.  Jalan Raya Andong is where you will start your wholesale shopping.  You will continue along Jalan Raya Andong to Jalan Raya Tegallalang. The shops usually open from around 9:30-10:00am and close around 4pm.

A local described this beautiful statue as the Robin Hood of Indonesia.
I have experienced shopping with a driver and on a motor scooter.  I recommend a driver who is happy to go along the road slowly stopping at the shops you see.  A motor scooter is awesome if you want to go back for a few more items, but impossible to carry everything if you buying large items. I didn't think that through at the time and had bags protruding all over the motor scooter behind hubby.  The road can be quite hectic at times, however, if you're patient, there are often large gaps in the traffic to cross over the road which is a better option than trying to turn the car around.

Driving up Jalan Raya Andong you will see Delta supermarket on the left.  This a huge, super clean, little bit fancy supermarket stocking everything from spices, gelato to rubber bands.  We popped down here a few times and apparently is cheaper than Bintang supermarket.

Delta Dewa Supermarket Ubud

Continuing up this road you will start to notice home decor outside the front of shops.  The shops are deceptive in that they look tiny but most of them continue out the back to large rooms.

As you drive along the road there will be times when there is nothing but small shacks, phone shops, etc.  It is up to you to yell "STOP!' to your driver if you see something.  They seem to be in clusters.  There is a ridiculous amount of shops to look at and I had pretty much finished my shopping after around 5km.  Once you hit the rice terraces there isn'tmuch after that.

While it is not humanly possible to walk into every shop on this road, nor remember all the shops I will personally recommend a few shops I just love and have kept the contact card.  Some I have been back to a number of times.  Some will post overseas too.  Everyone's taste is different so...

Baliraya Art Shop is run by a lovely girl.  Beautiful macrame, shell tassels, bags collars.  Everything is super reasonable and great quality.  I bought heaps from her.  She ships to Australia too.

Sentana Ayu just after Delta supermarket had my beautiful set of three candle sticks and other stunning wood items.  Super light and super cheap.

Fytrah Shell shop is worth a look for loose shells

Papua Art shop, two doors down is a run down tiny shop with antique items from Papua and the most stunning hand made tribal collars. They are super cheap, a little bit dusty and real statement pieces.

Egy Shell is fabulous for large shells at awesome prices.
