Musicals in Manhattan
Basically, On Broadway or Broadway are your high end most popular musicals that are in theatres larger than 499 seats. Off Broadway was theatres that house over 100 to 499 seats. Any theatres less than 99 seats are considered Off-Off Broadway
Wanting to experience as many On Broadway performances as possible we tried a number of options to buy reasonably priced tickets. For some reason we thought that the musicals would be fairly cheap considering how long the seasons are. Some run for years. Sadly this was not the case, they were very expensive, and the more popular the more expensive. We tried a number of options to buy the tickets which are detailed below.
The theatres are scattered all around the same areas within a few blocks of each other. Interestingly the theatres were attended were quite small and so most seats had a fabulous views. They were also very steep with the smallest seats on earth, and we are small people. Our knees jutted over the edge to the next rows. I absolutely loved the old fashioned program and candy sellers. Gorgeous atmosphere.
Matilda on Broadway
Shubert Theatre
225 West 44th StreetI had pre booked the tickets through Broadway Box for 2 for 1 deal with Broadway week. We paid $50 US for each ticket for centre Mezzanine. To be honest I have no idea what Mezzanine meant and thought it was a couple of steps up behind orchestra. However when we arrived at the Shubert theatre we found that it was a small, personable theatre and the Mezzanine was in fact a whole balcony up with perfect views of the stage. Orchestra was below us and rather flat. It was a wonderful performance oozing Tim Minchin with Australian comedy and dryness. The actors were fabulous and extremely talented. The 7pm performance finished at 9:45 where we eased out and bought Maccas strolling home to our hotel.
Kinky Boots
As we were staying for a month in Manhattan, we thought we would try another broadway show. We decided to try our luck getting discounted tickets. This proved to be very hard, if not impossible. We first walked to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre to try for last minute tickets. They had nothing to offer. We then decided to travel down the tie TKTS outlet booth located at the South Street Wharf. We had heard the there is no queue and you can grab great seats here. Off we trundled, a bit tricky to find, and discovered no queue, very quiet. We managed to grab some pretty decent tickets, fourth row from the front. They were brilliant seats and worth every cent. A wonderful show with Wayne Brady as the star.
Chicago
As my daughter is a dancer, Chicago was our last musical to see. As it has been running on Broadway for 22 years we figured it may be a cheapy. We tried again for a cheap ticket and managed to get Matinee for $60 US. Thinking that it may be a tired old musical we were presently surprised. The dancing, stage set and performances we unbelievable and worth every cent.
