Magical Munich
Arriving into Munich was a breeze. Although exhausted from our very long trip from Australia we walked straight the the airport trains following the green S symbol.
We bought our €11.50 ticket. We got off the train at the main station, Munich Hauptbahnhof and walked 10 minutes to our Hotel Eder. Such a cute little place with geraniums on the window sill.
Check in wasn’t until 2pm so we dropped off our bags and started our self guided walking tour. As it was 9 am Sunday morning it was very quiet.
Unfortunately not much is open on a Sunday. Everything is closed which is rather tricky when you want to get sim cards and food.
First stop was Sendiliner Tor or the start of the old town. A beautiful wall with green vines growing over it.
We then wandered through the arch wall and down the Main Street, Sendlinger Strabe. Everything was shut being Sunday. Nothing was open except a few food and drink venues. We walked past Asam's church as there was a mass from 10:15-11:15. We would return later.
Onto St Peters church Alter Peterskirche, we wandered down the edge of the building towards the back where we found the ticket booth to climb the tower. A heart racing exercise for very jet lagged peeps, we finally reached the bell tower. The top had breathtaking views of Munich. One side is the best looking over Marion Platz.
Once down. Legs shaking slightly from the climb we wandered into the church. Sun streamed through the windows giving an angelic feel.
A few sneaky photos later we exited through the opposite door into Marion Platz.
What brilliant timing as we knew the glockenspiel would be performing it’s cute little display at 11. The tin like figures performed little dances of medieval games once played. The little performance lasted around 10 minutes. The flowers were a stunning treat.
We then wandered down towards Francine church and lovely streets beyond. We then backtracked to Asam church to look at the gaudy wonders that this church is famous for.
Hungry by this stage we sorted out our first beer venue. Augustine Brauhaus beside the church was just the deal. We had delicious pork meatloaf with dumplings and half litre beer and apple roll spritzer setting us back 33€.
We walked to Hofgarten which was very pretty. Very full and feeling the jet lag at this stage we wandered back to check in.
Very happy with our lovely clean room and not wanting to fall asleep we left again to find the famous Hofbräuhaus Beer Hall.
Not as touristy as mentioned we wandered around looking at locked away beer steins owned by family members.
Still full from lunch we went looking for our next beer garden.
Augustiner Keller Beer garden was the destination. A huge beer garden 20 minutes walk from our hotel. This place was enormous.
We wandered through under gorgeous maple trees. Of course Sunday was packed. We noticed a service and self service area. We tried our luck with self service. Bought a beer and looked at the food. The food was so heavy and stodgy we were still not hungry. Sipping on our beer under the trees was very relaxing.
Very exhausted at the stage we dragged our feet home to our hotel ready for our next big day.
Munich exceeded our expectation. What a beautiful city
