Exploring Fifth Avenue to Flatiron

by - March 24, 2019

Hit the streets of NY, on the one day self-guided walk from midtown Manhattan to Flatiron district. Exploring the most fabulous street stretching from the top to bottom of 5th Avenue.

Still awake at 7:00am we wandered around the hotel and went to the free breakfast included in our room price. Awesome way to start the day, we lounged around feeling rather zoned out but ready to dive in. Eager to stay awake and slog through the time zone we stepped out at 9:00am straight up 40th crossing over 8th to Bryant park. We watched the ice skaters showing off. So satisfying to watch! Like watching seals playing on rocks. Don’t know why?

We played in the snow in Bryant Park, and took off to the New York State Library, which was sadly closed until 1pm as it was Sunday.

Many, many blocks later we finally reached Madison Square Park where was watched cute squirrels burying food in the snow. The streets were very quiet and a fabulous way to get our bearings. We took awesome photos of the Flatiron building directly opposite. My most favourite building ever!

Flatiron Building NYC

We started walking back up 5th Avenue taking in the view of the Empire State Building all the way to Grand Central Station. We found a T mobile shop along the way and dropped to to get our phones sorted. We bought 4 prepaid sim cards for 40US each. This included 1 month plan of 3gb of data, unlimited texts and calls. (no international). Phones set up awe continued walking past all the gorgeous shops including Zara on 5th, north of the library. Lots of things were on sale and half the price of Australia (of course!) We made some great purchases and were still way ahead even with the bad Australian dollar conversion. Hubby feeling rather cold by now we went on the hunt for a beanie and gloves dropping into H & M and Forever 21; awesome selection of stuff and cheaper than Australia yet again. Forever 21, located in Times Square was three stories. The entry level was very unwelcoming, but as we went down the escalators the set out was lovely. So much to look at.

Grand Central Station

Finally reaching Grand Central station, we wandered around finding the transit museum shop, (recommended) as a fabulous tourist shop). It was very expensive and a bit over rated but nice quality items.
Grand Central Station

We found the famous blue ceiling and the food court at the bottom where we got a fairly decent tasting specialty coffee. Had to get a latte as no flat white and hubby got a Cordata (espresso/piccolo). We people watched for a while looking at the cute little NYPD car inside the building, strange haircuts and strange people wandering around: a great people-watching place.

Still full from breakfast we continued up 5th avenue determined to make it to the start of Central Park to see snow before it melted.
St Patrick's Church Manhattan

We looked at the beautiful St Patricks church and then turned to see Banana Republic opposite with an extra 60% off (sorry hubby!) so wandered in for some heavily reduced items. We seriously didn’t think prices would be this great.

Central Park NYC

Finally making it to central park and taking in the view of the fabulous Plaza hotel we realised our exhaustion had finally set in. Dragging our tired feet back down 5th and meandering all the way to the Rockefeller Centre where we watched the ice skaters prancing, falling or not moving at all for ages. So entertaining! It was 4:00pm now and light was fading fast as was the temperature. We decided to head home to drop off our goodies. We relaxed in our room but realised we may fall asleep so headed out for dinner.

Shack Shack Times Square
The girls were keen to try the Shake Shack so we headed to the most popular one near Times Square of course with the longest line up. Luckily because it was so cold there wasn’t a huge line up as mentioned to us, but getting a table was ridiculous. Youngest daughter, with the most spunk followed the locals tactics of stalking tables and then when she saw people packing up standing in front the table and basically staring down anyone who came near to her. Stupid way of running a restaurant where people are standing staring at you eat so they can get your table next. So once we got our food and table we had another family standing staring at us eating. Weird. Anyway the food was much nicer than Maccas but expensive for what it was. 50US for the family that included 4 hamburgers, fries, shakes. Very full we wandered off to find Famous Footwear. All the way down to 34th totally exhausted we got teen daughter #1 a pair of Nikes for 70US. Home and bed. (15km covered in 1 day!) Can I just say that the service and friendliness of everyone in NY so far has been incredible. Every employee we have come across has been divine. So friendly and polite!
Thought I'd finish with my favourite building!
